Thomas Steven Platz placed third at the 1981 Mr. Olympia. He should, by most objective assessments, have placed higher. His lower body development — particularly his quadriceps — was so superior to every other competitor in the sport's history that judges routinely struggled with how to score a physique where one body part was three categories above everyone else while the upper body, though excellent, was merely competitive. Tom Platz did not just train legs hard. He had a philosophical relationship with the squat rack that bordered on the religious.

The squat as a way of life

Platz squatted with a frequency, volume, and intensity that has not been matched before or since. His leg training sessions — which he described as the most important hours of his week — could last 2.5–3 hours, comprising dozens of sets of squats at varying intensities and rep ranges.

His working sets frequently ran to 20–30 reps at weights that most people would use for sets of 10. A typical Platz leg workout might include 8–10 sets of squats ranging from 5 reps at near-maximal loads to 20-rep sets that he described as requiring him to 'leave his body' mentally. The physical and psychological demands of his leg training were unlike anything his contemporaries reported.

He was also technically exceptional. His squat — deep, controlled, with a precise bar position and tight back angle — was the result of years of mastery. He could perform ATG (ass to grass) full squats with weights that challenged elite powerlifters, and he placed enormous emphasis on the full range of motion as the source of his quad development.

The psychology of extreme training

Platz was the most articulate bodybuilder of his era about the psychological dimensions of training. He described the mental state required for his leg training as a total surrender to the process — an acceptance that the final reps would be painful beyond what conscious decision-making would normally allow, and that the ability to continue past that point was the real training.

He spoke about visualisation in specific terms: before approaching the bar, he would spend minutes visualising every aspect of the set — the foot position, the descent, the drive from the hole, the final reps. This pre-set ritual was not superstition; it was performance psychology applied to weight training decades before sports psychology became mainstream.

His belief was that the mind was always the limiting factor before the muscle. Muscles could endure far more than the conscious mind would permit. Training the psychological capacity to override the pain signals was, to Platz, as important as training the muscles themselves.

The full-range squat as the specific tool

Platz's leg development is directly attributable to the full-range squat performed with heavy loads and extreme rep ranges. Modern research on squat depth confirms his instinct: squatting to full depth produces significantly greater quadriceps hypertrophy than parallel or quarter squats, because the quad is most stretched and most fully recruited at the bottom.

He also incorporated leg extensions, hack squats, and leg presses as accessory work — but the squat was always the foundation. His view was that anything done on a leg press was supplementary to what the barbell squat did, and that no machine produced the combination of quad, hamstring, glute, and hip flexor stimulus that a deep, heavy squat required.

The limitation of the Platz model

Platz's leg development was also partly genetic. The insertion points of his quadriceps, the length of his femurs relative to his torso, and his natural neuromuscular recruitment patterns in the squat pattern gave him advantages that are not trainable. His approach amplified what genetics made possible — it did not create those proportions from neutral material.

Additionally, his volume and frequency were not sustainable for most people. The 2.5-hour leg sessions were supported by extraordinary pain tolerance, genuine obsession with the movement, and recovery infrastructure that most people cannot replicate.

What is replicable is the philosophy: squat deep, squat heavy, take the set further than feels comfortable, respect the movement enough to master it technically before loading it maximally.
