Time under tension (TUT) refers to the total duration a muscle is loaded during a set. A set of 10 reps with a 3-second eccentric and 1-second concentric creates approximately 40 seconds of TUT. The TUT concept, popularised by Canadian strength coach Charles Poliquin, suggests that keeping a muscle under tension for 40–70 seconds per set optimises hypertrophy. The idea sounds mechanically sound. The evidence is more complicated.

The case for controlled tempo

There are legitimate reasons to control rep tempo, particularly the eccentric phase. Eccentric (lengthening) muscle contractions produce significantly more force per cross-sectional area than concentric contractions, and there is strong evidence that emphasising the eccentric — through 3–4 second controlled lowering phases — increases hypertrophy compared to free-fall eccentrics.

Controlled tempo also protects joints at end-range positions (bottom of a squat, top of a biceps curl), reduces the use of momentum, and keeps the target muscle genuinely loaded throughout the range — rather than using a fast concentric to coast through the part of the rep where the muscle has mechanical advantage.

What the research shows

The original TUT prescription — 40–70 seconds of constant tension per set for optimal hypertrophy — has not held up well under direct experimental scrutiny. A 2012 study by Burd et al. found that lighter loads with slower tempos did increase muscle protein synthesis, supporting some TUT benefit. But subsequent studies comparing tempo-matched conditions found that the key variable was proximity to failure, not absolute TUT.

In other words: if two sets reach similar levels of effort (similar RIR), the difference in hypertrophy between a set done in 30 seconds and one done in 60 seconds is small. What matters most is how close the set gets to failure, not the clock.

The problem with excessive tempo

Very slow lifting (5-second or longer eccentrics, 3-second or longer concentric holds) forces a substantial reduction in load. At extremely low loads with very slow tempos, the muscle may not experience sufficient mechanical tension for maximal hypertrophy, despite long TUT.

Additionally, deliberate tempo reduces the velocity of movement — which matters for power development and athletic performance. A powerlifter who trains exclusively with controlled tempos will be underprepared for competition-speed movement.

The practical recommendation

Control the eccentric (2–3 seconds on the way down) on most exercises — particularly compound movements and exercises with a significant stretch at the bottom. Be intentional rather than fast on the concentric. Pause briefly at the top of isolation exercises if the muscle tends to disengage at lockout (lateral raises, leg curls).

Do not obsess over stopwatch tempo. Train close to failure, control the eccentric, and the mechanical tension and TUT will follow naturally.
